Answer: VISUtein will provide adequate levels of lutein and zeaxanthin. Studies have shown that these carotenoids are reduced in the retinas of people with macular degeneration. When supplementing the eye with these phytonutrients, youthful levels may be restored, halting the progression of the disease. It sounds, however, that your friend may already be very far down the line of vision loss, and the benefits, therefore, may be limited.

This concern comes from a study that has been performed in Finland where they supplemented the diets of smokers with 30mg of beta carotene and some other vitamins. In this group they found an increased occurrence of lung cancer. The dose used, however is so high compared to reasonable amounts that conclusions for normal intakes can not be drawn. This is a common problem in studies where researchers want to observe a quick effect and give a huge dose of a nutrient. There are many other studies proving the antioxidant effects of beta carotene.
There are also no problems for blood thinning medication users with VISUtein. There are, however, for OmegaLife-3 that also increases blood thinning.

That does not mean, they are not healthy for kids. On the contrary, kids need many nutrients in the same way as adults do. For Visutein, however, I do not think that kids really need this product.
